The inquiry is about “whether Westminster institutions have failed and whether indeed they are still failing to protect children from child sex abuse.

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse was set up by Theresa May as Home Secretary in 2014 to respond to mounting concerns over public bodies failing to protect children from sexual abuse.

The next three weeks of the hearings in central London will focus on how allegations of child sexual abuse by Westminster figures including politicians were dealt with.

The investigation will see police officers, politicians and other officials being interviewed about varying subjects including:

Why a dossier (Dickens) of establishment figures implicated in child sex abuse that since appears to have gone missing.

Whether the Home Office funded the Paedophile Information Exchange – paedophiles who lobbied to lower the age of consent to allow Special Branch to keep tabs on members.

Whether political parties ignored or covered up allegations of paedophilia by politicians, allowing Cyril Smith to become an MP despite police warnings of the Liberal MP using his position to abuse children and also ignoring allegations against Conservative MP Sir Peter Morrison as he became PM Margaret Thatcher’s, Private Parliamentary Secretary.

But what is a concern is that Sharon Evans a child abuse survivor who served on the panel of the Government’s original independent inquiry has said she was silenced to ensure Theresa May could become Prime Minister.

Evans was a senior figure and a public face at the inception of the inquiry, which was set up in 2015 following the Jimmy Savile paedophilia scandal while May was still home secretary.
